I always try to have a documentary in the works. It's a great way to stretch a bit and work through a long-form story. I like historical topics and have made films on Door County's lighthouses, the Cana Island Lighthouse, the United States Life-Saving Service and the Niagara Escarpment.
Keepers of the Door, Lakeshore Guardians and The Great Ledge all aired on Wisconsin Public Television. I had underwriters that helped me covering the expenses of making the films and was able to give the films to WPT to broadcast. It is an honor to have the films air on a fine venue like WPT. They're great people.
Wisconsin stories like these are everywhere and it is a lot of fun to find one and start shooting. I'm always surprised to see how they turn out and where they end up.
Here is a clip form The Great Ledge when Eric Fowle and i shot at Fonferek's Glen on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year.
Schneider Foundation and Menasha 's Family Foundation providing underwriting for the film. Their generosity has let me give the film to schools in the area at no cost to them. De Pere and Green Bay Schools are piloting the use of The Great Ledge and the Niagara Escarpment Resource network is developing a cirriculum for schools.
